Is PhotoShopping and altering images, anti-woman?

I had this conversation in a car with two friends the other day. One was vehemently against digital altering, and the other just as intensely for. I agreed with both, because both sides make alot of sense. We’re all self described feminists.

My Philosophy and Vision

I believe that everyone is beautiful, and happy people are extra-beautiful. My job as a photographer and visual artist is to communicate that, and to make your experience as comfortable and fun as possible (so that you’ll be happy, which will make you extra-beautiful, and come off in the images of you that we create).

A guiding inspiration in my professional life has been “work hard, play play-fully”….

What makes a good glamor photographer?

This is a follow up to my previous post, What Makes a Good Glamor Photograph? I’m trying to build this list for educational purposes, so feel free to comment and point me towards good sources for learning even more.

A good glamor photographer should:

What makes a good glamor photograph?

Lately I’ve been oft’ asked the question “what makes a good photo” by aspiring models trying to pick out the best photos for their portfolio, out of town friends trying to find a good glamor photographer, and other photographer colleagues. It’s often hard to describe why I tell a model to take a certain picture out of her portfolio, or why I insist that a certain image is “good”. Photos and sessions can provoke so much emotion, that it can be very hard to stay objective!

Types of photo editing I do

I thought it would be informative to write about the four types and levels of editing that I generally do to photos that I take. I really should illustrate this article, but writing while inspired (and not near my external picture drive)!

Candid thoughts on photographing the more risque

This whole post has been instigated after shooting a few boudoir shoots, after looking at other photographers’ works from all over the country, and since having had a running dialogue with friends and models… I am absolutely blown away by the meanings and interpretations of what is “risque”, what is “sexual”, what is “appropriate”, what

What is vintage styling?

WAC uniform

I see the term “vintage style” getting thrown around alot lately, even to describe non-vintage styled work that I’ve shot. I cannot find any guide or resource that definitively clarifies the difference between “vintage styling”, and “fashion/glamor of people wearing old clothing”. Let me illustrate what vintage styling is and is not, and attempt to define and clarify, by

A few Before and After pictures of Dasha

St. Louis Portrait Photographer

Dasha let me take a few portraits of her, to show off my skills with airbrushing, PhotoShop, and makeup artistry. In the second photo, she’s wearing a cool hair piece she hand made. It went with her makeup perfectly!     If you’re on a cell phone, here are the before and after pics:

Models editing images from our shoots….

Hopefully you can do better Photoshop work than this- one of my first tries, following a tutorial!

… Please DO edit any images you like, and then share your work with me- I’m curious to see it! I’ve decided to formally licence the images from TF* and paid sessions to those I work with (now and previously) under the “Attribution, Non-Commercial, Share-Alike” Creative Commons license, rather than continue with the norm of giving models

Thoughts on 2011 and Looking Forward

Underwater Photography

What an awesome year, both personally and professionally! After spending most of my adult life avoiding dating other artists, I made the exception… and his emotional, and material support (loaning me his lenses, lighting, and a professional studio that I could never have previously afforded), have reinvigorated and re-sparked my passion in photography. My primary

Photographers shooting photographers

Photographers shooting photographers

I got together with Kelly and Nancy at the studio, and we ended up shooting eachother. As I explained to someone later, it seems impossible for any sized group of female photographers to just “hang out” at a studio with their cameras, and not end up doing makeup and shooting eachother. All the dresses and furs
